RABIN MISHNAH STUDY GROUP
TRACTATE AVOT, CHAPTER FIVE, MISHNAH SIX (recap):
Ten things were created on Erev Shabbat at twilight. They are: the mouth of the earth, the mouth of the well, the mouth of the she-ass, the rainbow, the manna, the rod, the Shamir, the letters, the writing and the tablets. Some say that also the imps [were created at this time], Moses' grave and Abraham's ram. Some say that a wrench was made with a wrench.
EXPLANATIONS (continued):
7:
We can now turn our attention to the ten individual items listed by our mishnah as being so inimical to the orderly path of nature that their occurrence must be explained as having been ordained at the time of creation and planned to come into effect at the right time.
8:
The mouth of the earth. This phrase relates to the most serious of the rebellions that Moses had to face during his leadership of the recalcitrant Israelites. The Torah [Numbers 16] tells how Koraĥ, Moses' cousin, and Datan and Aviram, from the premier tribe of Re'uven, challenged Moses authority. As always happens in such cases they managed to recruit enough malcontents – two hundred and fifty – to constitute a real threat.
They combined against Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! For all the community are holy, all of them, and God is in their midst. Why then do you raise yourselves above God's congregation?" [Numbers 16:3]
Since Moses had not appointed himself to his task – indeed, he had done everything he possibly could to avoid the task! – he was shocked. It was God who had raised him up as leader of the people.
9:
As on previous occasions, when there was rebellion against Moses, God would destroy the people entirely, as an experiment that had gone wrong, and begin afresh with a new people that Moses would generate. And once again, Moses, the true shepherd of his flock, objects:
O God, Source of the breath of all flesh! When one man sins, will You be wrathful with the whole community? [Numbers 16:22]
And God relents: only the rebels will be destroyed.
Now Dathan and Abiram had come out and they stood at the entrance of their tents, with their wives, their children, and their little ones. And Moses said, "By this you shall know that it was God who sent me to do all these things and that they are not of my own devising: if these men die as all men do, if their lot be the common fate of all mankind, it was not God who sent me. But if God brings about something unheard-of, so that the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them … you shall know that these men have spurned God." [Numbers 16:27-30]
It is at this point that we read that
the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their households, all KoraË's people and all their possessions … the earth closed over them and they vanished from the midst of the congregation. [Numbers 16:31-33]
10:
To us it would seem that a fault in the earth's crust that opens, burying several hundred people, is a natural tragedy. But to the sages it was a 'fluke of nature' that must be explained as having been pre-ordained at the very moment of creation.
To be continued.
GEMAR ĤATIMAH TOVAH
The holiest day of the year approaches, the day which we shall spend in fasting and contrition, hopeful that true repentance will yield us yet another year in which to prove that we are not as recalcitrant as we really are. May we all be sealed in the Book of Life on this Day of Atonement. Fast well: may it be for you a profitable fast.
